We are hosting four Major Workshops in Fiction, one Major Workshop in Nonfiction and one Major Workshop in Poetry. All Major Workshops meet June 11 and June 12 (Thursday and Friday) and June 14 and June 15 (Sunday and Monday) 10 AM-1:00 PM Eastern Time. Topic: The Magnificent Seven: Revising Opening Pages
The first few paragraphs of any story are essential to capturing and holding a reader’s attention. In this revision-focused session, we will analyze exemplary compelling openings, discuss seven different approaches to strengthening our openings, and attempt to apply them to works in progress. Participants must bring a printed, double spaced copy of an opening three pages; paper or notebook; and a writing implement. No laptops or iPads, please. ++Scott Wolven is teaching this workshop in lieu of Elyssa East.++
2:30-4:30 PM: Reading Performance Lab (All Genres). Instructor: Shanna McNair. LOCATION: THE CLIPPER.
Reading well is an important component in one’s career as a writer. We’ve all been to a reading where words are stumbled over, the reader is too quiet, reads far too long—or simply isn’t able to communicate their own written words very well. Every writer and poet should know how to present their work in a compelling, confident way. And every writer and poet should be able to convey their own unique voice.
Everyone has different challenges when they read. Some need to slow down, some get dry mouth. There are a lot of variables. Shanna and Scott will hone in on each person’s challenges and offer ways to alter habits and strengthen skills. Each writer will get feedback on their reading performance and will get tips and tricks to use in their career to ensure that each reading, going forward, will go well. Attendees will need to bring a two-minute printed sample of writing to share with the group.

Topic: Tap Dancing on Thin Ice: Creating & Sustaining Dramatic Tension in Poetry.
We want to write poems that electrify an audience. Whether they are quietly reading our work or listening to us, we want to create an experience that deeply satisfies all attention paid to our poetry, but how do we do it? Surely, surprise, clarity, and a sharp sense of craft are at the center of this concern, but what exactly do these things mean? In this lab, we will examine poems by established authors and discuss the dramatic elements that make their work memorable.

Topic: Against Genre! Prose as a discipline.
In the context of a regular writing workshop, this class will think about grammar, sentence construction, and, above all, about paragraphing, as compositional elements. Genre, in fact, is a bookstore problem not a writing problem, and some of the very greatest prose works sit somewhere between fiction and non-fiction. We will think about the building blocks of prose writing as the ultimate destination of the form, and about story as a component of literary work regardless of where a work gets shelved. This is a class with clear interests not just in writing but in rewriting and maximizing the impact of a work with style and strategy.

Topic: Almost Incognito: Writing Through the Mask in Persona Poems
We usually associate character study with fiction or nonfiction, but persona poetry is also driven by the lives of characters—real or imagined. As with all writing, what fuels these poems is the author’s interest. Characters are chosen because they connect to the poet’s concerns. If I’m writing a poem in the voice of Sojourner Truth or Popeye or Mr. Rogers, I’m working with their words as I sense them, as Imagine myself being them. In this lab, we will examine persona poems and explore how a convincing persona is created. Is the poet directing the character’s voice or inhabiting the character—or both?

Topic: Don’t Give a Damn About My Bad Reputation: So, you think you might be a genre writer?
A Craft Lab for writers who are genre curious, or suspect (fear?) they may be writing genre already. What’s the difference between writing first or categorizing first, and does it matter? Who are genre labels for anyway? How permeable is the membrane between genre and literary fiction? This workshop will include discussion of craft and
practicalities, and provide the opportunity to start writing these kinds of stories in a non-judgmental space.

Topic: You Talking to Me? Mastering dialogue.
Birds do it, bees do it, you and me do it — we all communicate. So why can it be a challenge to create believable dialogue on the page and screen? We’ll discuss how dialogue enhances character, advances plot, and is also entertaining to read and write. This will be a generative workshop, so please come prepared to write and share your work during the session.

Topic: How Did We Get Here? Exploring Lyric Narrative Strategies.
Writers of narrative poetry (and lyric narrative!) often struggle with the need to present a story-driven plot while also maintaining lyrical language. How do we relay information without bogging down the text or losing tension? How do we navigate that poetic ability to travel through space and time, to embrace bewilderment and dislocation, without losing the reader to confusion? Luckily, the poetic toolbox is packed with lyric tools you may not have previously recognized as narrative strategies. Together we will consider the narrative potential behind techniques such as image, metaphor, non sequitur, repetition, and sonic elements such as rhyme or alliteration. While primarily informed by poetry and poetic techniques, this craft lab will also be useful to prose writers who are looking to strengthen or expand lyric elements in their work.

Topic: The In-Between: The Importance of Paragraphs and Those Blocks of Silence That Separate Them.
The how, when, and why to paragraph will be discussed. Equally as important, what’s going on in that marchland between blocks of words will also be discussed. It’s not dead space, even though it’s invisible. A story can live or die depending on what’s not said as easily as by what is. Writers should bring the first few pages of whatever they are working on to the Craft Lab to be used as examples of our investigations into paragraphing.

Topic: Autofiction and Memoir—How To Make Both Come Alive By Using The Prose Strategies Of Fiction.
This generative Craft Lab will be a fast-paced, advanced-topic presentation on how to make your autofiction and memoir be much more engaging for your readers by using some of the prose techniques of fiction. We'll discuss how to bend and alter time effectively within the narrative. Different methods of handling flashbacks and flash-forwards. How to make composite characters. And we'll drill down into ways of giving your readers well-delivered emotion content, while still moving the narrative forward. How to handle personal history and traumatic events in such a way that readers are engaged emotionally.

Topic: Same But Different: Woven, Repetition-Based Poetic Forms,
Offering a combination of example texts and hands-on experimentation, this craft lab will explore three woven, repetition-based poetic forms: the duplex, the pantoum, and the sestina. When repetition is braided into the structure of a poem, the poet is challenged to repeat a word, line, or phrase while also making each reoccurrence feel new and surprising. This is no easy task and certainly has its exasperating moments. However, the parameters of these forms are amazing teachers. They push us to consider language more closely, to think about every possible usage of a word, to pay particular attention to syntax and punctuation. And they ask us to really listen to our poems—to abandon any plans or intentions and instead give way to the unexpected turns and surprises of the journey.

7:30-9:30 AM: Informal meetup for TWH early risers. LOCATION: SEBASCO’S MAIN LODGE PORCH AND COMMON SPACE. (Optional.)
Informal and unsupervised: this is an available space for TWH attendees to meet up, if they wish. Bring your coffee and your notebook and enjoy the space or arrange to meet a TWH friend here. It’s up to you. (This space is not reserved just for TWH attendees and hotel guests will also be in the space if they so choose.)

11:00 AM-1:00 PM: Agent Pitching practice.
Log in and check in! There will be one Zoom link (below) for this day of virtual sessions. Writers will log in via this online schedule to register.
Practice pitching with TWH Directors Scott Wolven and Shanna McNair. Scott and Shanna will be available to hear pitches and answer questions before the Agent Pitching Sessions. This is an optional session.

2:00-5:00 PM: Pitching Session with Literary Agents
Writers have their literary agent lists and relevant information about participating agents and are prepared to pitch. Scott and Shanna will match each writer, so that they can pitch their manuscripts one-on-one in breakout rooms. Participating agencies for our pitching sessions are TBA.
This event concludes our conference.
